No-gi grappling in Vienna

Jiu-Jitsu without the uniform: faster, more dynamic and closer to wrestling. At Matte1 by Schwedenplatz you’ll find no-gi for beginners and advanced athletes – mornings and evenings, with dedicated classes for fundamentals, leg locks and takedowns.

No-gi training: two athletes in rash guards on the ground

What is no-gi?

The “gi” is the traditional uniform in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In no-gi you train without it – in a rash guard and shorts. With no collars or sleeves to grab, the fight is about wrists, the neck and body position, which makes the game faster and more athletic.

Wrestling takedowns and leg locks play a bigger role than in the gi. That’s why no-gi is especially popular with competitors, wrestlers and MMA fighters – and a very direct way into Jiu-Jitsu for beginners.

No-gi FAQ

Do I need a gi for no-gi?

No. No-gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts. For your first class, regular sportswear and a towel are all you need.

Is no-gi good for beginners?

Yes. Our beginners course is a no-gi course: 8 weeks of fundamentals in a fixed group, no experience needed. After that you can continue with NoGi Fundamentals and the mixed classes.

Can I train both no-gi and gi?

Yes. A membership gives you unlimited training in all classes – no-gi and gi.

Is no-gi the same as grappling?

“Grappling” is the umbrella term for combat sports built on grips, takedowns and groundwork without strikes. No-gi Jiu-Jitsu is one form of it – rooted in BJJ, with plenty of wrestling influence.

Can I drop in for a no-gi class?

Yes – with the €35 drop-in day pass you can join every class that day.
