Matte1 was founded in 2020 by three BJJ athletes who shared one vision: to make Vienna a home for authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. What started as a small class in a rented room quickly grew into one of the city’s leading BJJ gyms.
Our name is about more than the mat itself – it stands for the first place to go for BJJ in Vienna. The “1” reflects our standard of quality and our place at the top of the Austrian BJJ scene.
From day one, our goal has been to make Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu open to everyone – whatever your age, gender or experience. That inclusive approach has made us one of the most diverse and strongest BJJ communities in Austria.
